You have been warned: This is a TMI post about female menstrual cycles.
Honestly, this was the first question that has arisen to me when I had that DivaCup laying infront of me. A woman who only used sanitary napkins all her life was too scared to use it. I took a deep breath and went ahead. It did not really hurt - you may feel a little discomfort if you are a first time user and it was natural for me to feel discomfort not until I get used to it. But if you have been using tampons and cups for most of your life - you should be perfectly okay.

Menstrual cycles occurs in a girl when she reaches puberty at the age of 12 - in some cases from ages 8 - 16. I got my first periods at the age of 15. These are the physiological changes that may indicate that a female is fertile and ready for sexual reproduction and fertilization. To manage the flow of your menstrual cycles, women makes use of sanitary napkins, tampons and even cups.
DivaCup reached out to me, introduced the Diva Menstrual Cups to me and offered a chance to review. Never been used menstrual cups myself, I was a little skeptical. I always favored sanitary napkins as they are easy to use, less messy and do not gross me out as the idea of tampons and cups do. Eventually, I agreed to try and test it. Although, after using the menstrual cups myself, I have realized there have been a lot of misinformation about the menstrual cups out there.
What is The DivaCup?
The DivaCup is a bell shaped, reusable menstrual cup that is worn internally and that sits low in your vaginal canal, collecting your menstrual flow in the cup rather than absorbing. It is soft, flexible and made from quality silicone - not the same silicone used for breast implants and are perfectly safe to use. Trust me, it's not as scary as it sounds. Honestly, as a first time user the thought scared me too, it's natural. But once you get used to it, you won't be bothered at all. Infact, your body will thank you for giving the care it deserved.
The DivaCup Features:
- Wear the cup up to 12 hours with leak-free protection!
- Made from the highest quality healthcare grade silicone to assure comfort and durability.
- Does not contain any of the following: latex, plastic, PVC, acrylic, acrylate, BPA, phthalate, elastomer, polyethylene, and free of colors and dyes.
- Reusable and eco-friendly – no waste, no chemicals.
- Features extra grip ridges for easier removal.
- Cleared for marketing by the US FDA and the Australian TGA and the only reusable menstrual cup allowed to be sold in Canada by Health Canada.
- Diva International Inc. is the only ISO 13485:2003 certified menstrual cup manufacturer and head office in the world!
- Fold the cup
- Sit down n a comfortable position with your vaginal muscles relaxed - Hold the cup and insert it gently inside.
- Removal of the cup may sound a little messy to some of the women but after having tried the cup - it's not at all messy.Pull gently the stem of the cup until you reach the base. Pinch the base of the base to release the seal and continue to pull down the cup to remove it. Your hands or fingers won't get bloody at all! Empty the cup in the toilet, wash and reuse it.
- The DivaCup must be emptied, rinsed and re-inserted after every 12 hours - that's 2 times a day. You can sleep wearing the cup overnight without having to worry about the leakage. Women with heavy flows may need to empty the cup more often.

I currently use Softcup... http://www.softcup.com/
I was totally scared at first, but inserting was easy and painless... Not uncomfortable like a tampon, especially if you are a little dry to insert or don't necessarily insert far enough. I can use the restroom without even taking the cup out and I only have to change it twice a day even when I am having a heavy cycle.
When taking it out I was freaked out about it and it took me awhile to actually be able to master it. (It still feels weird to me)
The downside is how messy I get when pulling it out. Unlike these Diva cups you actually insert your middle finger and pull it out by the ring just under your pelvic bone. The feeling is odd, very messy, and I still have not got used to it.
I get the Disposable SoftCup at Walmart for $6.00 for 14 of them. I have not been able to find the reusable ones.
I am interested in trying these cups and seeing if I wouldn't like them better... The no mess would be enough for me to switch... :0)
